Officials Certification and Training

Why are we conducting clinics?

The NKSL relies heavily on volunteers to work in the capacity of officials in order to conduct fair and equitable competitions for our swimmers.  Goal of this clinic is to train enough officials from each club so that every dual meet can be adequately and consistently officiated.

Why are we asking Y and USA certified officials to attend the clinics?

It is important that all officials whether new or previously certified have a clear understanding of the expectations of the NKSL and its current philosophy on officiating.

What are the requirements for being a NKSL official?

Y and USA officials: attend a NKSL swim clinic.  New officials: 1) attend a NKSL swim clinic, 2) watch the Officiating Swimming video, and 3) apprentice (shadow) an experienced official for one whole meet.  Once certified, NKSL officials will be issued cards which we will ask you to wear during the swim meets.

Who is considered an NKSL certified official?

The NKSL president will maintain a list of NKSL certified officials which will be posted on this website and e-mailed to each team’s delegate.  Current YMCA and USA certified officials who have attended the NKSL swim clinic will automatically be NKSL certified.  New officials must attend the swim clinic and shadow an experienced official (a YMCA or USA official) for one swim meet before being NKSL certified.

What rules/ regulations are followed by the NKSL?

The NKSL follows all rules and regulations of United States Swimming (USA), as amended except for the following exceptions:

1)      The USA sudden death (no recall) first start shall not apply and one allowable false start per person per event shall be permitted in NKSL swimming.

2)      USA whistle start will not be used.  The league will use spoken commands.

3)      The USA backstroke rules shall apply except for the turn.  The following will be allowed:  After the initiation of the turning action, no additional arm pull may be started; however, kicking and gliding actions are permitted.

Who will be allowed to officiate at the All Star and Champ meets?

Any NKSL certified official is eligible to work the All Star and Champ meets.  In fact, the NKSL will encourage a mix of officials from all teams to work these meets.  However, certain positions such as chief judge, starter and referee will likely be assigned to the most experienced officials.
